Top Sunderland managerial target could now join Black Cats ‘in the coming days’

Sunderland seems close to securing their new manager, according to L’Equipe. The top candidate for the Black Cats appears poised to make the move to the Championship, following the dismissal of Tony Mowbray after a string of poor results. Several names, including Paul Heckingbottom, Julien Sable, and Kim Hellberg, were initially linked to the managerial position, with Hellberg briefly considered the frontrunner before leaning towards a role at Hammarby.

Now, attention seems to be turning to Will Still, heavily associated with the club since Mowbray’s departure. Recent reports indicate progress in talks between Louis-Dreyfus and Still, suggesting a promising direction for Sunderland. The 31-year-old coach seems keen on the move to Wearside and is reportedly considering departing Reims due to concerns about the team’s future progress, especially given upcoming tournaments like the AFCON and Asia Cup, along with uncertainties about Reims’ plans for the January transfer window.

RMC Sport also mentioned that Sunderland is prepared to grant Still substantial influence in recruitment, but a compensation fee to Reims might be necessary for his release from the French side.

How exciting is Will Still?

Will Still is without a doubt the most interesting and intriguing name on the list of managers linked with Sunderland.

The coach, who turned 31 in October, is already creating a name for himself in Europe, having taken Reims to within striking distance of the Champions League qualifying round.

He still speaks Belgian, French, Dutch, and English and appears to be the ideal manager for our youthful squad, particularly Abdoullah Ba and Adil Aouchiche.

Hopefully, we can get him in sooner rather than later, though the commencement of the Ligue 1 winter break on December 20th may potentially impact his arrival.

Fortunately, Mike Dodds has been outstanding in the last two games, so there is less pressure on the board to bring in Tony Mowbray’s replacement right now.
