A major claim has been made about one reported Newcastle United transfer target ahead of the January transfer window.
Newcastle United have been given an additional worry ahead of their Champions League match against AC Milan on Wednesday night.
Already missing long-term injury victim Nick Pope due to a potentially season-ending shoulder injury, Eddie Howe revealed it was’slightly questionable’ whether Martin Dubravka would be available to face the Serie A giants.
The Slovakia international was due to make his first Champions League group stage game since December 2010, when he began for MTK Zilna in a 2-1 defeat against Russian club Spartak Moscow.
Due to the uncertainty surrounding Dubravka, Loris Karius may only make his second appearance for the Magpies after making his debut in last season’s Carabao Cup Final defeat to Manchester United.
The former Liverpool midfielder has not played in a Champions League match since the Reds’ final defeat to Real Madrid in May 2018.
Before Dubravka’s injury, the Magpies were thought to be considering a January deal for a goalkeeper, and they have been connected with offers for Tottenham Hotspur veteran Hugo Lloris and Arsenal and England stopper Aaron Ramsdale.
However, journalist Fabrizio Romano has now reported that free agent David de Gea is ‘waiting for a call’ from the Manchester United administration. He has stated that the former Spain international ‘would love’ to join the Magpies and return to the Premier League after leaving Manchester United in the summer.
“I saw one about Newcastle’s goalkeepers,” he told Kick. Newcastle is looking into fresh goalkeeper possibilities. Newcastle has been plagued by injuries. Nick Pope is injured, but Dubravka is also not fully fit. De Gea is waiting, De Gea would love to join Newcastle United, De Gea is only waiting for a call.”
