Milan ‘one step away from the abyss’ – over €100m could go up in smoke and this will badly affect Stefano Pioli’s positon.
If AC Milan were to exit Europe tonight, it would have significant financial ramifications in terms of revenue lost compared to previous season.
This morning, Tuttosport (via MilanNews) reports that Milan are “one step away from the abyss.” The Rossoneri are perched on the brink of a chasm that might swallow them up and end their European campaign before Christmas.
Stefano Pioli’s team requires a miracle, but one that appears unlikely to occur. Milan must defeat Newcastle this evening and hope that Borussia Dortmund, who have already qualified, defeats PSG to go to the round of 16. A victory at St. James’ Park would at the very least ensure qualification for the Europa League.
If Milan does not get through tonight, the accounts will suffer as well. The team earned nearly €85 million in income from last year’s UCL semi-final, whereas a goodbye in the group stage this year would already cost €57 million.
When we add the over €50 million for qualification for the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025, the figure approaches over €100 million. If Newcastle falls apart, Pioli’s status may be called into doubt.
