According to new allegations from Alan Nixon, Sunderland target Benjamin Rollheiser is ready to join Benfica for £10 million.
Sunderland and Newcastle United have both showed interest in Estudiantes winger Rollheiser in recent months, but both look set to miss out on the 23-year-old.
Alan Nixon has provided further insight into the player’s future, with Rollheiser on the verge of a £10 million move to European heavyweights Benfica.
Although Newcastle United may have been able to compete with this particular bid, it is likely that the Black Cats have been priced out of a deal, are unwilling to accept Estudiantes’ asking price, or have been outbid entirely by Benfica.
They must now turn their attention to other targets as they attempt to enhance their team in order to improve their prospects of finishing in the top six at the end of the season.
Money better spent elsewhere
Sunderland will have been trying to secure a deal for the teenage winger, and may have felt they could negotiate a lower price given the league in which he is presently playing.
However, with a cost of £10 million agreed upon between Benfica and Estudiantes, Sunderland would be better off investing their money elsewhere. Even if they were willing to pay £10 million, it appears considerably more worthwhile to spend this on a variety of targets rather than one big signing.
The Black Cats are now sixth in the Championship league and will play third-placed Leeds United tomorrow evening. This will be a significant test for the Wearsiders, and it could offer the Sunderland administration an idea of which places they need to spend in during the January window, if any.
