Newcastle’s Callum Wilson hits out at Tottenham star over “lack of respect”

Newcastle forward Callum Wilson has conceded that Guglielmo Vicario exhibited “a lack of respect” after an incident toward the conclusion of the Magpies’ 4-1 loss to Tottenham.

After an argument, Callum Wilson accused Tottenham goalie Guglielmo Vicario of “lack of respect.”

Wilson challenged Vicario, who looked to stick his tongue out to taunt his opponent after Tottenham’s thrashing win, and the Newcastle striker claimed Everton’s Jordan Pickford did the same in midweek.

“Isn’t there a way to win?” remarked Toon replacement Wilson. I believe we witnessed it last week when Everton was winning and (Jordan) Pickford was acting erratically. I assumed it was just a lack of respect when the goalkeeper started pulling faces and joking around. But I spoke up, we’re adult men, and we move on.”

Wilson was embroiled in another brawl with Tottenham defender Cristian Romero, who was lucky to escape with a yellow card for an X-rated challenge.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe described it as a “dangerous” assignment, which was the last thing he needed with an already debilitating injury list before of Wednesday’s Champions League showdown with AC Milan.

Howe said: “I was pleased to see Callum get up from that because it looked dangerous. I’ve got my heart in my mouth when I see any of my players go down at the moment.

“I don’t want to see any player sent off but we can’t use that as an excuse. We have not been at our best. That’s there for everyone to see. The players have given everything but the performance was still not what it should have been. I cannot argue with the fact our away form has to be better. But we will need the crowd behind us on Wednesday night to lift us and our home performances have been very good when we’ve needed them.”

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou complimented two-goal hero Richarlison for helping Spurs break a five-game winless streak. “Yeah, Richy was fantastic,” Postecoglou remarked. Very important. I have nothing but praise for the lads. They worked quite hard today. Our attacking play was as strong as it has been in a long time. We’re getting players back; Newcastle is clearly running on fumes. We’ve been through it, and hopefully we’re on the other side.”

Meanwhile, Postecoglou has stated that he will meet with assistant Chris Davies, who is a target for Swansea as they seek a new manager. “We haven’t had time to think about it,” Postecoglou continued. In the Premier League, you must be completely focused on the task at hand.”
