Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United suffered another away setback, this time a 4-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
There can be no excuses today, as there were against Everton in midweek, since Newcastle United were simply not at their best.
However, the fact that senior players made defensive blunders once again will irritate fans.
Alan Shearer was not thrilled with Jamaal Lascelles and Martin Dubravka’s contributions to Tottenham’s opener, describing them as’really awful,’ as he told Premier League Productions (10/12/23 at 5:25 pm).
Son Heung-min outdid his former teammate, Kieran Trippier, by playing the ball across the penalty area.
And, given Ange Postecoglou’s team’s attacking style, they overwhelm the opposition’s final third like no other.
While it was a terrific game to see for Spurs fans, Alan Shearer didn’t like it and pointed out several flaws.
Newcastle United’s defending against Tottenham
“I think Lascelles’s positioning is really poor,” said Shearer. “If he comes back another yard, then he stops that.
“From Tottenham’s point of view, it’s really good. But I would also say, ‘why is he coming out with his feet instead of his hands?’”

Injuries and a lack of form have harmed Newcastle, who are currently in the midst of their worst run of the season. Ally McCoist believes Martin Dubravka should be the long-term replacement for the injured Nick Pope.
The worst part is that it arrived at the wrong time, because the fixtures are arriving thick and fast.
Not more so than the crucial Champions League match against AC Milan.
Perhaps this was just what Newcastle’s players needed.
But if they perform like this in Europe, they will be eliminated immediately and would enter the second part of the season in terrible shape.
