‘That’s what started it’: What Jordan Pickford was spotted doing to Newcastle’s fans at full time last night

It all started at full time following Newcastle United’s defeat to Everton, and Jordan Pickford was unsurprisingly involved.

When Newcastle plays Everton, the former Sunderland goalie is constantly mocked, but he is never hesitant to give something back.

Pickford has previously confessed that the Newcastle crowd may have an effect on his performance, so it’s no surprise that Toon fans try their hardest to annoy him whenever they face off.

On Thursday night, it was Everton and Pickford who had the last laugh. His team won 3-0 at Goodison Park, with Kieran Trippier making two uncharacteristic errors to give the Toffees the victory.

Newcastle had a night where not much went right. Anthony Gordon struggled on his return to Merseyside, and the final whistle was quickly followed by an altercation on the pitch.

What happened at full time after Newcastle lost to Everton

The Newcastle players were unhappy with Everton’s number one, including Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Fabian Schar, Pickford, and James Tarkowski.

Former Newcastle defender and BBC Newcastle analyst John Anderson has now described why it all seemed to start.

What Jordan Pickford did that enraged the Newcastle players

Everton's Jordan Pickford ruled out for a month

Following Newcastle’s 3-0 defeat to Everton, Anderson explained what Pickford did that led to Bruno and co becoming enraged.

“Pickford applauded the Newcastle fans,” he said.

“That’s what started it all.

“There’s no love lost between him and them. They wind him up and you have to say in recent years we’ve had the better of him.

“Tonight he’s exacted a bit of revenge if you want to call it that.”

Pickford is extremely simple to wind up, but he is also extremely easy to wind up the Newcastle fans.

Should he have acted the way he did? Probably not, but after taking so much hatred throughout the game, he has every right to reply.

It has to happen eventually. He is not the type of character who will simply let his football speak for him, especially against Newcastle.

The post-match scenes were revolting, but given the volatile materials involved, it was unavoidable.

It should serve as a preparation for Eddie Howe’s team as they prepare to face Sunderland in the FA Cup at the Stadium Of Light next month.
