‘Unbelievable’ title-winning manager reacts when asked about taking Sunderland job

Steven Schumacher, manager of Plymouth Argyle, has distanced himself from the Sunderland post, stating that he is in ‘no rush’ to leave the Championship newcomers.

One of the Football League’s most highly-rated head coaches was quick to dismiss claims that he could have taken over at West Bromwich Albion following Steve Bruce’s dismissal a year ago.

And, with Steven Schumacher’s name circulating again following Tony Mowbray’s resignation from Sunderland this week, the Liverpool-born 39-year-old is once again hesitant to add gasoline on the fire, preferring water over petrol.

“It (rumours) has happened before. I tend not to get involved in it, if I’m dead honest. I speak to my agent and say ‘Don’t bother me until you need to’ and he doesn’t,” Schumacher tells Plymouth Live.

“It doesn’t affect me one little bit so, no, I’m not aware of anything.

“It’s part and parcel of it. You sort of get used to it. And, as I have said before, it’s a good thing because it shows you are doing something right.”

The ‘unbelievable’ Schumacher worked alongside now-Preston North End manager Ryan Lowe at Home Park before taking over in December 2021. Last season, he ended Plymouth’s 13-year exile from the Championship by defeating another Sunderland-linked boss, Kieran McKenna of Ipswich Town, to win League One.

And, while the Sunderland post may pique the interest of ambitious young coaches, Schumacher does not sound like a man packing his belongings and prepared for the long journey north.

Black Cats need a new boss

“If your fans don’t want you to leave, it means you’re doing something right.” “In general, I think everyone understands that there will come a time in the future when a club comes along, and I feel like it might be the right opportunity, if we’re still doing really well,” Schumacher continues.

“I could get fired here!” So it is only one of them. Most football fans, I believe, would understand that.

“I’ll know when the right opportunity comes along.” But I’m at the right place at the right time. I’m constantly learning, making mistakes, becoming better at making judgments, and tactically getting better.

“I feel like this league is constantly testing us, which is exactly what we wanted.” It’s just what we expected. It’s fantastic that the entire crew is learning. I’m still rather young. I’ve been a manager for two years and have no plans to relocate. “I’m in a fantastic situation.”

Sunderland are apparently interested in Reims manager Will Still, as well as Nice assistant Julien Sable and former Scotland captain Scott Brown.
