Managerless Sunderland will go head-to-head with arch rivals Newcastle United in the FA Cup third round next month
Graeme Souness would love to see Sunderland return to the Premier League. The former Liverpool captain made the revelation after the Black Cats were drawn against archrivals Newcastle United in the third round of the FA Cup.
Sunderland, who advanced to the Championship play-offs last season, are presently ninth in the table after a three-match winless streak since the international break.
Souness remarked on talkSPORT this week: “Sunderland are a massive football club.” They have a large fan base.
“They should be in the Premier League. They would be an asset. They are going to get 50,000 people every week in the stadium. In that part of the world, if you have got two teams (Sunderland and Newcastle) at it then it is only good for football.”
The Black Cats are looking for a new manager after parting ways with Tony Mowbray yesterday night. His departure occurred two days after a 1-1 draw against Millwall.
Despite winning just two of their last nine games, Sunderland are only three points off of a play-off berth.
“All at SAFC have thoroughly enjoyed working with Tony, and he is quite rightly held in high regard by our players, staff, and supporters,” stated Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman.
“He helped guide us to the Championship play-offs after arriving at an uncertain time and played an important role in developing our team.” This was a difficult decision to make, but we remained committed to our goals and strategy, and we felt that the time had come to take this step.
“We are now focused on identifying the right candidate and we will continue to support our coaching team and players throughout the interim period.”
Following Mowbray’s departure, first-team coach Mike Dodds has been appointed as interim manager. Sunderland return to play on Saturday, when they host West Bromwich Albion at the Stadium of Light.
