Bookies name favourites for Sunderland job – Former Newcastle boss in the running

Sunderland are looking for a new manager after sacking Tony Mowbray on Monday night. The club’s next FA Cup match is against Newcastle United next month.

The Mackems are just three points out of the play-offs after finishing sixth last season, but owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus evidently decided it was time for a change ahead of the Tyne and Wear derby in January.

Sky Bet now has OGC Nice assistant Julien Sable as the 1/1 favorite to succeed Mowbary, with highly rated Reims manager Will Still coming in second at 4/1.

Following Steven Schumacher (5/1), Paul Heckingbottom (13/2) following his sacking at Sheffield United, and Steve Bruce, the former Newcastle manager is currently the sixth favourite at 10/1.

In a recent interview, the 62-year-old, who led Sunderland from 2009 to 2011, confirmed that he wants to get “back to work” after a year away from football:

“This is the longest I’ve been out of the game.” I was unbroken for almost 46 years, and now I’ve got a year off.

“I’ve been busy building a house for the last couple of years, so I’ve gotten myself involved with that.” But, look, it’s time for me to return to work.”
