After losing veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the end of the 2022-23 season, AC Milan is trying to bring in a similar figure who can play a key role both on and off the field.
While Zlatan did not play every minute of his final Rossoneri season, his labor off the field will be remembered as the club’s biggest loss.
The 42-year-old had played in four of Europe’s top five leagues and had witnessed practically everything, both highs and lows. As a result, losing a player with his background would have been devastating to the locker room.
While he is expected to return to the club in some form, the Rossoneri are also keeping an eye out for a player who may fill a role similar to the one the Swede held during his playing days.
As Christian Falk noted in his guest essay for CaughtOffside, Milan could make a play for Thomas Muller, whose future at Bayern Munich is uncertain.
According to the article, the 34-year-old wants to continue with the German heavyweights until 2025. However, with his contract set to expire in June 2024, if no arrangement is reached, the Diavolo will seek to entice him to join them.
Muller has seen and won it all, from the World Cup in 2014 to the Champions League, frequently playing a vital role. Stefano Pioli is not opposed to a 4-2-3-1 formation this season, therefore he provides extra coverage for the attacking midfielder position.
