Newcastle United now ready to complete shock deal for free agent

Newcastle United is ready, according to sources. David de Gea pounces on a ‘devastating’ Nick Pope update from a source.

Newcastle United are preparing a deal for free agent David De Gea after Nick Pope suffered a horrific injury that will keep him out until April, according to Football Insider.

De Gea, 33, has been without a club since his contract with Manchester United terminated at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Newcastle fear Nick Pope will be out for a lengthy time after suffering an injury in Saturday’s 1-0 triumph over Manchester United at St James’ Park.

According to Football Insider sources, the Magpies’ number one is facing a heartbreaking four-month spell on the sidelines due to a dislocated shoulder.

Pope was Eddie Howe’s first-choice goalie this season and had played every minute of Premier League and Champions League action until his injury.

This season, he has made 20 appearances in all competitions, surrendering 19 goals and maintaining eight clean sheets.

Martin Dubravka, who came off the bench to keep the clean sheet against Manchester United, will now be the stand-in goalkeeper.

But, with numerous important injuries in Howe’s team, Newcastle are considering a move for De Gea.

Despite winning the Premier League’s Golden Glove award last season, the ex-Spain international was permitted to leave Manchester United.

He has made 415 appearances in the English Premier League, surrendering 446 goals and maintaining 148 clean sheets.

De Gea reportedly earned £375,000 per week on his previous Manchester United contract, but he agreed to a pay cut in order to stay at the club before that deal was terminated.

Andre Onana took over in goal for the ex-Atletico Madrid player, but the Cameroon international has received mixed reviews thus far this season.

In other news, Newcastle is facing a multi-million pound bill as a result of a Mike Ashley snafu.
