Dermot Gallagher delivers verdict on controversial Newcastle United v Man Utd decision

Newcastle United v Man Utd: There was one moment of controversy during Newcastle’s win over the Red Devils on Saturday night.

Dermot Gallagher, a former Premier League referee, believes Robert Jones made the correct decision in not sending out Fabian Schar for a challenge on Bruno Fernandes. The referee waived away Schar’s protests for a foul and consequent red card when he caught the Manchester United skipper on the foot.

VAR reviewed the tackle at the moment but did not advise Jones to reconsider his decision. Although Gallagher believes there should have been no red card, he is critical of the decision not to award a foul.

Gallagher commented on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, “It certainly shouldn’t have been play on.” I tell all new referees that when a player overruns the ball, he is grabbing for it.

“He goes past the ball and stands on his foot, so I think it’s low enough for a yellow card but not play on.” Yes, red card if it was on his ankle or shin.”
