Newcastle United injuries: Eddie Howe has provided an update on midfielder Elliot Anderson’s back issue.
Elliot Anderson has missed Newcastle United’s last nine games due to a back ailment and could be out until early 2024.
Before his injury, the 21-year-old had made 12 appearances for Newcastle this season and was pushing for a regular berth in Eddie Howe’s starting lineup. Anderson came off the bench in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace and played the entire game before complaining of a sore back the next day.
Howe told The Gazette back in October: “The next day [after Crystal Palace], he woke up with a sore back and it didn’t really go away so he’s had scans and tests and it looks like eight weeks.”
Anderson’s injury has been out for six weeks, and he has yet to return to training. When asked for an update on the youngster’s progress, Howe stated Anderson had another scan on Friday and is facing a total of 12 weeks away.
“He’s continuing his work behind the scenes,” Howe told The Gazette. “He’s having another scan to see how he’s healing. We’ll see the results of that but he’s going to be out for what we originally said which was around 12 weeks.”
Anderson would miss a further nine Newcastle matches if he was out for another six weeks, including the final Champions League group stage fixture against AC Milan, the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Chelsea, and the New Year’s Day showdown at Liverpool. Anderson might return to the Premier League on January 30 if his recovery progresses as predicted.
