Newcastle now shock contenders to sign £37m forgotten Chelsea striker

Newcastle United have expressed an interest in taking Romelu Lukaku off Chelsea’s hands once his loan with Roma expires.

The silly season has begun, when media outlets all over the world bring out dartboards with players’ names and toss darts into them with different club crests on the flights to generate a transfer narrative.

This time, it was Belgian outlet Voetbalkrant that tossed a Newcastle United dart into the board, which landed on Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku is still on the goals trail at Roma

The Chelsea striker is on loan at AS Roma, where he has six goals and one assist in 11 games.
There’s little doubt that Newcastle will be looking for a striker, and Chelsea have set a fee of roughly £33 million for the Belgian, which would make him affordable, but nothing about this one makes sense to us.

Why would Newcastle take that chance if Lukaku keeps returning to the Premier League and it never works out for him?

We can do better than 30-year-old Lukaku

In addition, his age does not fit the profile of a Newcastle transfer target.

This just feels like another calm day in the media offices, so we’ll link mega-rich Newcastle to a high-profile celebrity and disregard any reasoning. Although they also stated last week that Newcastle ‘dream’ of signing him, it appears that they are adamant about this one.

We would have been enthused by the prospect of having Romelu Lukaku in a Newcastle shirt a few years ago, but now we believe we can do better.
