Sunderland have announced the signing of goalkeeper Matty Young to a professional contract.
Young, a teenager from Sunderland, played for the first team during their pre-season tour of the United States. He’s become a fixture at youth level for the Black Cats and is one of the finest prospects on Wearside.
His abilities have drew admiring views from others as well. Back in September, Manchester City was connected with a deal for the player.
Sunderland, on the other hand, have announced that Young has agreed to a three-year contract extension at the Stadium of Light. Young has spoken out about the new contract, which will keep him on board until the summer of 2026. He stated:
“I am delighted to sign my first professional deal. I started my journey here near 10 years ago and it has always been my dream to play for Sunderland AFC. The opportunities over pre-season were incredible but I know this is just the start for me.”
Has chance to emulate former player
It will be fascinating to see if Young gets any playing time for the Black Cats in a competitive game this season. Even though he is highly regarded, it appears doubtful unless the club is dealing with an injury crisis at goalie.
If Young is as excellent as Sunderland and, apparently, Manchester City believe he is, he might have a long and prosperous career. He’s unlikely to be thinking about it; instead, he’ll be focused on breaking into Sunderland’s first-team.
If there is one player Young aspires to be like, it is former Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. He gained a move to Everton after breaking through at the Stadium of Light, and is now England’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Pickford, like Young, rose through the ranks at Sunderland and has gone on to achieve much in his career. Young hopes to achieve the same success in his profession. For the time being, the player will concentrate on playing for Sunderland U21.
