Newcastle United v Chelsea: The referee appointments have been made by the Premier League this weekend.
The Premier League match officials for Newcastle United’s home encounter against Chelsea on Saturday (3pm kick-off) have been confirmed.
This weekend’s match at St James’ Park will be officiated by Simon Hooper. Hooper last officiated for Newcastle in a 2-2 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road in May.
Hooper awarded three penalties in the game, two of which went to Newcastle and were converted by Callum Wilson.
Major Liverpool blunder
After a month off following Tottenham Hotspur’s contentious 2-1 win over Liverpool in September, this will be Hooper’s third Premier League match as a referee. Hooper officiated the match in which Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were sent off, as well as a Luis Diaz goal that was mistakenly disallowed for offside due to a huge VAR blunder.
Spurs went on to win in the 96th minute thanks to a Joel Matip own goal. PGMOL conceded mistakes were made during the game, and there were objections from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, as well as a recommendation to rerun the game, but the result held.
Adrian Holmes and Simon Long will aid Hooper, and Jeremy Simpson will serve as the fourth official. The match will be officiated by John Brooks, who will be assisted by Neil Davies.
Brooks served as VAR in Newcastle’s previous Premier League match, a 2-0 loss at AFC Bournemouth.
Newcastle will return to Premier League action after the international break, eager to avenge two consecutive defeats.
Newcastle are now seventh in the Premier League rankings, four points ahead of Chelsea in 10th.
