Is he the optimal choice to step in for Sandro Tonali?
Newcastle United is determined to secure the acquisition of an “extraordinary” player at any cost in the upcoming January transfer window, according to recent reports.
Newcastle’s Pursuit for Tonali’s Replacement
Eddie Howe has faced a challenging start to the season, contending with various issues while expecting his team to progress further. Unfortunately, injuries have plagued Newcastle, leaving key players sidelined for significant periods. This depletion was evident in their recent 2-0 Premier League defeat against Bournemouth.
Adding to their woes, Newcastle encountered the setback of Sandro Tonali’s 10-month suspension due to betting offenses, prematurely ending his season shortly after joining. With Tonali’s impactful presence in midfield gone, the focus has swiftly shifted to securing a replacement, deeming a January signing crucial.
Speculation has linked Kalvin Phillips to a potential move to Newcastle, given his limited playing time at Manchester City. Additionally, Ruben Neves and N’Golo Kante have emerged as targets, both currently competing in the Saudi Pro League.
Newcastle’s Urgency for Phillips
As per the latest update from Tutto Juve, Newcastle is determined to secure Phillips in January as their primary midfield target to fill the void left by Tonali’s absence.
However, financial constraints, coupled with Juventus’ competition and City’s reluctance to lose money on Phillips, pose potential hurdles. City’s initial significant investment in Phillips last year makes a loan deal without an option to buy less likely.
Despite the challenges, Phillips remains a highly appealing option for Newcastle in January, although negotiating on their terms might prove difficult given City’s stance. Phillips sharing the same agent as Nick Pope could potentially aid the transfer.
Given the approaching Euro 2024 next summer, the 27-year-old might seek a mid-season move from Etihad Stadium for more consistent playing time, making St James’ Park an enticing destination.
City’s manager Pep Guardiola has previously praised Phillips as “exceptional,” indicating his value despite the current preference for other midfield options. Phillips has demonstrated his prowess at the highest level, particularly shining for England during Euro 2020.
Among Newcastle’s considerations to replace Tonali, Phillips emerges as the frontrunner based on this update. Securing a deal, whether short or long-term, could prove to be an inspired signing for the club.
