The Philadelphia 76ers received shocking news about Kelly Oubre Jr. over the weekend. After allegedly getting hit by a car in Center City Philadelphia, the veteran forward was taken to the hospital with broken ribs. Nick Nurse provided an update on Oubre’s future status earlier this week. He is already back with the team as a spectator while his health is being monitored. Before the Sixers faced the Boston Celtics on national television on Wednesday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski provided an update on Oubre. He stated that he could return to the court for the Sixers in three weeks.
“I’m told that it’s a realistic expectation that he could be back in two plus weeks,” Woj told reporters prior to the game. “Perhaps the end of November, the beginning of December.” Prior to getting hurt, Oubre was looking like one of the biggest steals in all of free agency.
Despite joining the Sixers so late in the offseason, he was able to have an immediate impact. Oubre was bringing offensive firepower off the bench or in the starting lineup, whether he was playing off Joel Embiid or Tyrese Maxey. Oubre averaged 16.3 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game in his first eight games with his new squad, while shooting just under 38% from outside the arc.
Given the severity of his injury, Oubre missing only a few weeks appears to be a blessing for the Sixers. His scoring punch has been missed in recent games, leaving a large hole to fill. Despite missing Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis, the Celtics defeated the Sixers for the second time in a row on Wednesday night.
