Alexander Isak: Kieran Trippier has backed his Newcastle United team-mate to score 20-plus goals this season – if he stays fit.
After a bright start to life in the Premier League, Kieran Trippier has urged his Newcastle United teammate Alexander Isak to go ‘to the top’.
Isak has 17 goals in 37 appearances for Newcastle after arriving from Real Sociedad last summer for a club record cost of £63 million. Prior to his groin injury last month, Isak was the Premier League’s second highest scorer, trailing only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
This season, the Swedish striker is averaging a goal per 83 minutes on the pitch in the Premier League and has an incredible conversion rate of six goals from only 15 shots.
And Trippier, who played against Isak when at Atletico Madrid in La Liga, reckons the 24-year-old will score over 20 goals for Newcastle this season if he stays fit.
“I played against him in Spain, so I knew all about him anyway, but his finishing is up there with the best I’ve played with,” Trippier said in an interview with Sky Sports. “He’s terrifying. What he gives to the squad, not just goals, but he’s so fantastic with the ball, he’s got everything in my opinion.
“He can dribble, he’s fast, very fast, and he can score goals.” People forget how young he is, so I believe he has a chance to rise to the top. He’ll score 20 points or more this season if he’s healthy.”
Isak’s injury has forced him to miss at least a month. Despite missing the previous five matches, the striker is set to return during the international break, with Newcastle’s next Premier League fixture against Chelsea at home on November 25.
