Ismael Bennacer confirms he will return to action in mid-December after missing seven months due to a knee ligament injury and promises Milan ‘intend to win’ the Champions League.
The Algeria international has been out of action since May, when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, necessitating surgery and a protracted layoff.
He spoke to reporters at an event celebrating the launch of Casa Milan Dubai and told The National that he hopes to be back on the court by the middle of next month.
“That’s difficult. When you have this type of injury, and especially at this time, because that was one of the most crucial games of my life.
“But it’s OK when you see positive things day by day, when you work, when you have a plan to return, when you see there are some steps.” I didn’t work for two months, and then you’re doing the bike, then jogging, and then more.”Everything is going fine, and I have no pain in my knee. There has also been no reaction.”
The 25-year-old suffered the injury during Inter’s Champions League semi-final on May 10, and despite a poor start to the current season, he believes his teammates will be right back there in 2024.
“First, you play to win the Champions League, not playing just to be in the Champions League,” Bennacer went on to say.
“Then, having tasted the Champions League semi-final, you want to go higher, do better.” That is why we will try again this year.
“Because, like I said, we’re not simply here to play in the group stage or the quarter-finals. No, we intend to win. However, as we have seen, many clubs will have a chance to win.”
Milan had failed to score a single goal in their first three games, but a 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain opened up qualifying.
Borussia Dortmund now leads the table with seven points, followed by PSG with six, Milan with five, and Newcastle United with four.
“You want to win every year when you play for AC Milan.” This year, we have a very excellent team, very talented players, and newcomers. We are constantly forming a team. It will take some time, but we will be fine.”
