Speakman says ‘elite’ Sunderland star will get even better after big development

Kristjaan Speakman lauded Patrick Roberts after he signed a new contract with Sunderland.

Speaking to the club, Speakman stated that the attacker would only improve now that he has signed a new contract.

Patrick Roberts’ future at Sunderland has never appeared certain, despite joining on a six-month contract in January 2022.

The forward agreed to a new two-year contract on Wearside, despite his successful Championship campaign last season attracting interest from Southampton in the summer.

While Roberts has yet to make an impact this season, he has been terrific recently and has delighted fans by committing to new terms this week.

Speakman lauded the Sunderland man after signing a two-and-a-half year contract with the possibility of an additional year.

“Patrick has been at the heart of our success over the last two seasons, and he has developed into an important member of our team.” He boasts some exceptional abilities, and at the age of 26, we are confident that he will continue to develop, progress, and mature.”We are delighted that he has signed a new contract, and his dedication to the club reflects not only his belief in our progress, but also our relentless pursuit of excellence.”

Does Patrick Roberts’ lacklustre goal tally matter?

Patrick Roberts is a perfect illustration of how stats don’t always tell the whole story in football.

In 79 games for Sunderland, the 26-year-old has only scored seven goals and provided nine assists, but he is definitely one of our most skilled players.

This season, Roberts has made the second-most critical passes per game (1.9) and is second only to Jack Clarke in dribbles completed per game (2.6).

Against Birmingham City, the attacker completed the most critical passes (4) and had the third-most touches (69).

The former Manchester City midfielder creates so many chances for Sunderland, and there is no question that he will begin to tally up assists as players like Nazariy Rusyn and Mason Burstow find their feet.

Keeping hold of Roberts is absolutely huge and hopefully it can now persuade Clarke to do the same thing.
