Newcastle United is reportedly eyeing the acquisition of a 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder valued at €40 million by Atalanta for the upcoming year. Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web disclosed Newcastle’s interest in Ederson, emphasizing the Magpies’ pursuit of a midfielder as the January transfer window approaches. Atalanta is firm on their demand for €40 million to release the talented Brazilian midfielder.
Ederson has quietly made a mark in Serie A since arriving in Italy almost two years ago, establishing himself as an underrated midfielder. After honing his skills in Brazil and progressing through the ranks at Desportivo Brasil Ltda youth division in 2017, he transitioned through three clubs in his home country before moving to Salernitana and then to Atalanta in July 2022.
His tenure at Atalanta has significantly boosted his profile, showcasing his talents at the Gewiss Stadium. His current season’s performance has been promising, contributing five goals and one assist in 16 appearances across various competitions.
Ederson’s impressive growth hasn’t gone unnoticed, drawing interest from prominent European clubs, including Newcastle United. The Tyneside club, especially with Sandro Tonali facing a long-term ban until the start of the 2024/25 season, urgently needs midfield reinforcement, thus eyeing potential signings like Kalvin Phillips. However, Ederson remains a viable target for Newcastle, and they seem financially capable of meeting Atalanta’s €40 million asking price.
Newcastle’s pursuit of a midfielder in the January transfer window is crucial, considering Tonali’s absence and their ambition to elevate their midfield department. While Ederson stands as an appealing option, it remains uncertain if he will become their primary target. As of now, the €40 million-rated Brazilian midfielder is an option on Newcastle United’s radar.
