Burnley were reportedly in attendance last week to scout Manchester City starlet Jadel Katongo in person.
According to the Sun, Vincent Kompany and co. appear to be after the 19-year-old’s signature.
Last week, Burnley scouted Manchester City’s Jadel Katongo.
The Englishman, who is presently on loan at Peterborough United in League One, is making headlines for all the right reasons.
By trade a center-back, the teenager has been faced with playing defensive midfield at times this season, a position he has taken to like a duck to water.
Burnley observed Jadel Katongo in action last week, as they examine his prospective arrival as a long-term project, as he continues to impress on loan.
However, the Clarets are not the only team interested in signing the kid, with Southampton also reportedly interested.
Jason Wilcox, a former Sky Blues academy coach, has been the Saints’ academy director since January of this year and is well aware of Jadel Katongo’s abilities.
For the adolescent, relocating to Southampton made more sense.
It is unclear whether both Burnley and Southampton intend to sign Jadel Katongo on loan or permanently.
However, if given the option of joining either club to further his development, the highly rated defender should probably choose the Championship side.
Burnley now sits at the bottom of the Premier League table after 12 games, and they appear set for relegation.
As a result, being a part of such an environment may not benefit Katongo, while playing in the English top division may be too much, too soon for him.
Southampton, on the other hand, are presently fourth in the Championship and might make a return to the Premier League next season.
In terms of both teams’ current statuses, as well as the step-up in leagues that Jadel Katongo would have to make, joining Russell Martin’s side appears to be the better option from a player standpoint.
