Newcastle United star subject to late fitness call ahead of Bournemouth – could miss three matches

Newcastle United will make a late injury decision on Callum Wilson’s hamstring injury ahead of Saturday’s (5:30pm kick-off) trip to AFC Bournemouth.

Newcastle may be without Callum Wilson this weekend after he was taken off at half-time against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

Wilson complained of hamstring tightness after the Magpies were defeated 2-0.
The 31-year-old has since been called up to the England squad, though England manager Gareth Southgate has described him as a ‘doubt’ for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

Howe shed more light on Wilson’s situation ahead of the trip to Bournemouth.

“A tight hamstring, we’re doing various tests,” Howe said. “He’s been called up for England but we’re waiting to see how he is and if he can play this weekend.

“We’re going to see how he is [in training]. I don’t think there are any concerns [about England call-up] we’ll be in constant communication with Gareth [Southgate] and England.”

Newcastle already has Bruno Guimaraes suspended, Sandro Tonali banned, and Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Harvey Barnes, Elliot Anderson, Matt Targett, Jacob Murphy, Dan Burn, and Javier Manquillo all injured for the trip to the Vitality Stadium.

Despite missing the Sweden national team due to a groin injury, Howe described Isak as “progressing well.” The Newcastle manager expects the forward to be available after the international break.

Matt Targett and Jacob Murphy have recently undergone surgery for hamstring and shoulder injuries, respectively, and are expected to be out until early 2024 as a result.

Newcastle have gone nine games unbeaten in the league, and Howe will be looking for his first Premier League win against his former club Bournemouth after overseeing two 1-1 draws last season.
