Newcastle United handed Champions League lifeline despite going bottom of Group F

Newcastle United’s Champions League task may have been made a little easier after AC Milan shocked PSG.
Newcastle United dropped to the bottom of Group F, but their chances of making the last 16 were boosted after AC Milan defeated Paris St-Germain 2-1.

Milan won at the San Siro thanks to goals from Rafael Leao and Olivier Giroud, who led the fightback in Group F and left PSG stunned. It means that Borussia Dortmund now leads the group with seven points, PSG is second with six, and Milan has five.

United are still on four points after two defeats to Dortmund, but a win in France in a fortnight could see Newcastle leapfrog the Ligue 1 side. Dortmund must also travel to Milan, where a win for the Italians or a draw would make things even tighter going into the final game.

Wins over PSG and Milan in the final group game at St James’ Park could see Newcastle qualify for the last 16 as no one is running away with the group.

“We weren’t at our best tonight,” Eddie Howe said afterwards. I thought our normal game was lacking in intensity and quality. From our perspective, Joelinton’s header was the game’s defining moment.

“Now we have to try to win our last two games.”It’s difficult to say at this point, but we’ll probably need to win our last two games.”

However, the head coach’s mood would have been lifted after hearing Milan’s result because a win away to PSG in the next match means it’s all to play for for the Magpies once more.
