Fabian Schar was the latest Newcastle United player on media duty ahead of our Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund, following Eddie Howe.
The Swiss defender delivered an impressive performance, with several highlights and brilliant quotes from his 15-minute press conference (watch it in full below).
Schar hinted that he’d be happy to stay at St James’ Park for the rest of his career, which is great news given that his current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and praised the squad’s unity, saying he’s never felt anything like it in his career.
When asked about upsetting Arsenal in our ‘controversial’ win on Saturday, the 31-year-old sent a blunt message to our ‘big six’ rivals, saying “I really don’t care” and praised Eddie Howe for the amazing work he and his colleagues have done for the club – and him personally – since he took the job two years ago.
Watch what he had to say below, followed by snippets of his best quotes from yesterday’s press conference, which also includes glowing praise for Jamaal Lascelles:
Schar when asked if he could finish his career at Newcastle:
“I wouldn’t complain! – I love the club and want to be here. I don’t have to say anything else.”
Schar on Eddie Howe and the togetherness of this squad:
“I was in a difficult situation (before Howe arrived) and I didn’t know if the club was there for me. When Eddie came in, that was my chance.
“I wouldn’t be in this position without him. I’m so thankful the club brought him in. I try to give everything back and leave my heart on the pitch.
“”It’s the best time in my career. It’s my second home. I’ve never felt this togetherness in my career – it’s unbelievable. The coaches have made this possible. This is the best time of my career. Newcastle has given me a lot and I just want to give them something back.
Schar on playing in the Champions League with Newcastle:
“I didn’t expect to be playing in Champions League. I never thought about it. It was a different time. The first three or four years we were fighting relegation. That is what makes it even better for myself. I love this club so much and having these times.
“It’s such a tough group. Against PSG it was probably one of the best games and performances. You can see what SJP can do. That’s the level we want to be at game by game. You can’t reach it every game but we can learn a lot from the Dortmund game.”
Schar on Jamaal Lascelles:
“He’s been brilliant. He’s stepped in and performed on a really high level. I’m really pleased for him. It wasn’t easy for him not playing too much. I was in similar situations. I’m really happy for him.”
Schar on Dan Burn’s back injury:
“Another big blow in terms of injuries but there is time for other players to step up. I’m confident in the entire team.”
“You’ll have to ask him….. I’ve had two great years under Eddie and he’s made me a better player. When the team is doing well it is easier. I’m just happy to see the way the club has been.”
