Eddie Howe confirms Newcastle United star hasn’t travelled to Borussia Dortmund after training ‘well’

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has provided an update on Sandro Tonali’s situation following a 10-month suspension from football.

Tonali was barred from playing until August 2024 after violating Italian betting regulations while at AC Milan. While he cannot play in competitive matches, the 23-year-old can train and travel with the first-team.

But, in his pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League group stage match at Borussia Dortmund (5:45pm kick-off), Howe confirmed: “No, [Tonali] hasn’t travelled with us.” He worked out this morning and worked hard.”

On Monday morning, before the rest of the squad flew out to Dortmund, the midfielder was spotted training at Darsley Park.

There has been no word on whether Tonali will be able to play in friendly matches for The Magpies while the Football Association investigates him further.

Howe was asked if there had been any developments in the FA’s investigation.

“Nothing that I am aware of,” he continued.

Tonali is one of 12 Newcastle players who will miss Tuesday’s game against Borussia Dortmund due to injury.

The Magpies are currently third in their Champions League group, and a win at Signal Iduna Park would significantly increase their chances of qualifying for the last-16 of Europe’s premier club competition.
