Newcastle United star handed Premier League ban after Arsenal incident

Bruno Guimaraes, a Newcastle United midfielder, has been suspended for the club’s trip to Bournemouth next week.
Newcastle United will be without key midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for next Saturday’s Premier League trip to AFC Bournemouth after the Brazilian was sent off against Arsenal for his fifth yellow card of the season.

Guimaraes was booked in the 88th minute for a push on Fabio Viera in a tense match at St James’ Park, which the Magpies won 1-0 thanks to Anthony Gordon’s controversial winner. According to Premier League regulations, any player who receives five cautions in the first 20 games must serve a one-match suspension.

The 25-year-old is still eligible to play in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League match away to Borussia Dortmund before being forced to miss the weekend trip to the South Coast.

Newcastle send warning to Real Madrid as they 'open dialogue' over new Guimaraes contract

“I was frustrated, not so much with Bruno, but with the decision,” Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said. “Bruno, in my opinion, is ahead of the player, and he gets booked.” I’ll have to see it again, but my first thought was that it wasn’t a booking.

“I think there were a lot of unnecessary yellow cards today, and we can’t pick up suspensions with so few players available.” Losing Bruno for any game is a setback for us, but we’ll deal with it.”

Newcastle are already without a number of key players. Alexander Isak, Elliot Anderson, Sven Botman, Matt Targett, Harvey Barnes and Javier Manquillo are out injured, while Sandro Tonali is suspended for 10 months.

Howe is also awaiting further updates on Dan Burn (back) and Jacob Murphy (shoulder) after they were forced off against Arsenal.
