Newcastle United has a slew of injuries right now, and they picked up a couple more over the weekend in preparation for their match against Borussia Dortmund.
Dan Burn and Jacob Murphy were forced off during Arsenal’s 1-0 victory, while Eddie Howe did his best to keep Callum Wilson on the field by taking him off in the 62nd minute.
With Alexander Isak out with a groin injury, the 31-year-old has been Newcastle’s only fit striker recently. Given Wilson’s fitness issues, Howe has been forced to manage the number nine with caution.
A new update, however, suggests that Howe may have a second striker at his disposal sooner than expected.
Alexander Isak seen in Newcastle training ahead of Dortmund
Isak was expected to return for Newcastle when they face Chelsea at the end of November, the club’s first game following the upcoming international break.
However, according to the Chronicle, Newcastle may have received an injury boost.
Isak has been spotted in training ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund, according to the Chronicle. He was spotted working with Toon physio Dave Galley, according to reports.
It’s unclear whether this means the 24-year-old will play against Dortmund or Bournemouth this weekend. However, it is heartening to see him return earlier than expected.
Isak has been outstanding this season, and Howe described him as ‘outstanding’ in the buildup to the Magpies’ previous Champions League game. The Swede started against Dortmund that night, but was forced off due to a groin injury.
He hasn’t been seen since and is now tied for first place in the Toon scoring charts with Callum Wilson, both on seven goals.
It would be a huge boost if Isak was available for either Dortmund or Bournemouth, as he was expected to be out for a few weeks. Newcastle, however, will be cautious not to rush him back after he has already suffered one setback.
