Newcastle United star facing one-match suspension ahead of Arsenal fixture

Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United is walking a disciplinary tightrope ahead of the Premier League match against Arsenal.
Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United will start this evening’s Premier League match against Arsenal (kick-off 5:30pm) as he continues to walk a disciplinary tightrope.

Guimaraes has received four yellow cards in the Magpies’ first ten Premier League games this season, and another before matchday 20 – Liverpool at home on December 30 – will result in an automatic one-match suspension.

Since his last booking in a 2-2 draw at West Ham United last month, the Brazilian has avoided cautions against Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers, but the visit of Mikel Arteta’s title-chasing Gunners today may provide a stiffer test.
Indeed, Guimaraes will need to stay out of the referee’s book once more if he is to play in Newcastle’s final game before the two-week international break next week against AFC Bournemouth.

And Magpies head coach Eddie Howe has already stated that he will not ask the player to alter his game in order to avoid suspension.

“It’s like any player, reining in [his aggression] maybe not because you take something away from his natural game,” Howe said before Crystal Palace’s 4-0 win. “It’s the bookings that are needless that we want to try and take out of our games.”Because the rules have changed, there will be more yellow cards, so referees have definitely tightened up over the summer in terms of discipline, time-wasting, and loads of little things to the game where you can, and some of our players have picked up a yellow card for nothing, or perceived nothing.
