Alan Shearer backs Newcastle United to complete January deal for PL Powerhouse

Newcastle United’s latest news and transfer rumours as they prepare for Carabao Cup action.
Newcastle United are gearing up for Carabao Cup action, hoping to put a disappointing result or two behind them. Over the weekend, Eddie Howe’s men drew with Wolves in the Premier League, following a Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

They will now look to make amends in the Carabao Cup Round of 16, which will be a rematch of last season’s final, with the Magpies facing Manchester United. Meanwhile, we’ve compiled a list of all the latest St James’ Park news and transfer rumours.

Midfielder links

Newcastle are said to have two key midfield targets on their shortlist ahead of the January transfer window, with the club now in need of more depth in the middle of the park following the lengthy suspension of Sandro Tonali. Lyon’s Rayan Cherki and Nice’s Khephren Thuram, according to Ignazio Genuardi, are being considered.

Lyon’s poor start to the season may make Cherki available, while Thuram has been linked with a move to the Premier League on numerous occasions over the last year. Nice is said to have turned down offers for Thuram over the summer.

Shearer’s Onana praise

Newcastle has also been linked with Everton midfielder Amadou Onana in their search to replace Tonali. The Toffees are unlikely to sell Onana in January, but he could be sold in the midst of FFP issues at Goodison Park and an ongoing takeover saga.

Meanwhile, Alan Shearer has praised Onana’s most recent performance following Everton’s big away win over West Ham United over the weekend.

“A real powerhouse performance,” Shearer told Premier League Productions. At the heart of Everton’s midfield, he set the example.” Newcastle fans will be pleased to hear that their club is still linked with Onana.
