Newcastle United’s four potential replacements for Sandro Tonali in the January transfer window.
Newcastle United have a major issue on their hands. Last week, the Magpies found that Sandro Tonali had been involved in gambling infractions, putting their £60 million summer investment in jeopardy.
Tonali’s legal counsel have been in talks with Italian authorities, and it has now been established that the player will serve a 10-month ban. “An agreement has been reached between the federal prosecutor and Sandro Tonali,” said Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina.
The plea deal lasts 18 months, eight of which are for rehabilitation, which includes therapeutic activity and at least 16 public appearances.”
Newcastle’s summer signing will now be unavailable until August of next year, leaving Eddie Howe without a successor. The Athletic and The I feel the Magpies have four possibilities coming into the January transfer window. We’ll walk you through the reported alternatives here.
Kalvin Phillips
Phillips is unpopular at Manchester City, and he has never been popular since his £50 million move from Leeds United. Pep Guardiola has conceded that he ‘failed to get the best’ out of the midfielder, who has not been trusted to work within the Spaniard’s system.
The former Leeds player has revealed that he must make a choice before January, with Gareth Southgate saying that he needs his men to play regular games ahead of Euro 2024. There may be a deal to be struck, and a loan agreement may be the most likely in January.
Scott McTominay
McTominay is also thought to be on Newcastle’s radar, but they may be too late. This isn’t due to a lack of interest elsewhere, but McTominay has three goals in his previous two league outings, and Erik ten Hag has spoken about his importance to the squad. The Red Devils do not appear to be willing to let the Scot leave this winter.
Amadou Onana
Onana is now playing for Everton and is an important part of Sean Dyche’s plans, which might make a deal tough to complete, especially given that the Toffees are subject to a takeover offer. The Toffees are unlikely to sell Onana in January, and Newcastle may not have the financial flexibility to press their hand due to FFP.
Joao Palhinha
Palhinha’s circumstance is somewhat unique. On deadline day in the summer window, he was minutes away from signing for Bayern Munich, even posing for photos in Bavaria, but his deal was stopped at the last minute. Bayern Munich is rumored to be interested in a winter transfer, and Fulham may be compelled to grant the player’s yearning to go on to greater and better things. The question is whether Newcastle will be able to push their way into the situation.
