Newcastle United major injury boost as ‘huge’ player spotted ahead of Champions League clash

Joe Willock has returned to Newcastle United training ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League encounter against Borussia Dortmund.

Newcastle United travel to St James’ Park (8 p.m. kick-off) leading their Champions League group after a 0-0 draw at AC Milan and a 4-1 triumph over Paris Saint-Germain. Dortmund remains unbeaten in the Bundesliga this season, but they are bottom of Group F after failing to score in their first two games.

Willock is on the verge of returning to first-team action after a protracted absence. The 24-year-old midfielder has been out since May after sustaining a hamstring injury against Brighton & Hove Albion last season, which was followed by an Achilles injury.

Willock returned to full training last week, according to Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe, but he did not play in Saturday’s 4-0 win against Crystal Palace as he works on his fitness after being sidelined for more than five months.

Willock returned to full training last week, according to Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe, but he did not play in Saturday’s 4-0 win against Crystal Palace as he works on his fitness after being sidelined for more than five months.
Willock was observed exercising with Newcastle on Tuesday morning, as Howe’s team prepared for their third Champions League group stage encounter.

The midfielder is expected to return soon and even turned to Instagram to provide an injury update, writing: “Nearly there.”

Howe expressed his desire to see the midfielder back in action ahead of the Palace game.

“I want him back,” he stated emphatically. “He’s trained this week for the first time with the group but it’s probably a bit early to have him involved in the matchday squad but he’s getting closer and he’s a huge player for us.”
