Christian Marques has spoken out about his choice to quit Wolves earlier this month.
Some were surprised when the teenage defender left the club on a permanent basis to join Swiss side Yverdon Sport.
Marques was once regarded as one of Molineux’s most promising young players.
Marques impressed at the Wolves academy in ‘the Conor Coady position’ after joining the club in January 2019.
Marques, on the other hand, never made a first-team appearance for Wolves.
He spent time on loan with Belenenses and then Forest Green Rovers.
He didn’t play a single minute for the former, and injuries ended his time with the League One club.
Marques is now with a new club and has spoken about his departure from Wolves…
Christian Marques opens up on exit from Wolves
Marques discussed his decision to leave the club with the Express & Star.
Despite the fact that things didn’t work out for him, Marques has no ill will toward Wolves.
“I can’t complain about anything,” he said. I joined the club at 16 and was intended to be with the under-18s, but things soon changed and at 16 I was captaining the under-23s and training with the first team.
“It was something I wasn’t used to. I came from Switzerland and I was training with the under-15s and under-16s at the time, then I went over and had to get used to speaking English.
“I believe I made the correct decision. I can’t say I planned everything, but I had an idea of what I wanted to do this year and in the coming years. I watched a lot of guys from here travel to Germany and France last season, so that’s one of my key aims.
“I’m trying to play as much as I can here for one, two or three years and then make the next step again.”
Marques confesses that his time in Portugal did not go well, and that the catastrophic hamstring injury he suffered at Forest Green Rovers was particularly frustrating.
Marques exit was a shame to see
Marques’ departure from Wolves was a bit of a letdown given how highly he was regarded a few years ago.
The expectation was that he would make the first team and become a regular in defense.
He had excelled in the Coady position when he was younger.
But Marques fell down, and his loan move to Belenenses was the beginning of his problems.
Then came the injury at Forest Green Rovers, which came at the worst possible time.
Hopefully, Marques can now jumpstart his career and we will see him playing at a better level in a few years.
