Dennis Cirkin, a Sunderland defender, is nearing a return to the first team after suffering a hamstring injury.
The ‘gifted’ defender picked up the injury after the 5-0 win over Southampton on September 2nd, missing the last six Championship games.
Although he is nearing a return, Saturday’s trip to Stoke City may be too soon for the Irish left-back.
However, he has recovered faster than expected, with manager Tony Mowbray confident that Cirkin will be back in action soon.
Cirkin’s fitness, according to Mowbray
The 59-year-old said that the former Spurs defender was getting closer to a first-team return ahead of the return of Championship competition this weekend.
However, he did suggest in an earlier press conference before the international break that Cirkin’s first game back may be too soon, and that comment appears to be correct.
However, it is an encouraging update on the 21-year-old’s fitness, which will undoubtedly benefit the Sunderland side upon his return.
Sunderland has received a significant boost.
The fact that Cirkin is getting closer to a first-team return can only be seen positively by Mowbray’s team.
Although he has yet to reach the pinnacle of his abilities this season, his injury layoff will provide him with an added motivation to reach the levels he displayed towards the conclusion of last season.
