Following rumors from Spain, the situation with Bruno Guimaraes’ Newcastle United release clause has been addressed.
According to Sport, Guimaraes’ contract included a £60 million release clause that could only be triggered by Barcelona. The Brazilian just signed a new five-year contract with Newcastle, which includes a £100 million release clause.
However, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has responded to the Spanish accusation on social media, writing: “Understand there is no specific release clause for Barcelona or any specific club into Bruno Guimares new deal at Newcastle.”
“The only clause applies to all clubs and is worth £100 million, as revealed in September.” Sources affirm that there are no more clauses.”
Guimaraes’ new contract with Newcastle extends through June 2028. The 25-year-old midfielder has been a crucial player for The Magpies since his £40 million move from Lyon in January 2022, when he signed a four-and-a-half-year contract.
He has appeared in 67 games for the club, scoring 11 goals, and is currently on international duty with Brazil.
Guimaraes told the club website after his new deal was confirmed: “I’m absolutely delighted.” Since my first day here, the fans have made me feel at home, and I’ve never been so loved in my life.
“I’m so happy here. It’s a place that is so comfortable to be and I hope to keep making the supporters happy and helping the team do well. That’s my goal, because there are no words to describe how happy I am to be here.
“I remember in my first interview, I said I wanted to play for this club in the Champions League and now it’s happening.
“The city believes again and it’s unbelievable what we have done for the team. I hope that this can continue. It’s amazing what has happened in my life in the last two years.”
Guimaraes has received Premier League interest from Chelsea and Liverpool, and he even admitted to having a “conversation” with Real Madrid last summer.
The player will return to Newcastle later this week in preparation for Saturday’s Premier League match against Crystal Palace (3pm kick-off).
