Although Alexander Isak is a “quality player,” the Newcastle United attacker will not score more Premier League goals this season than Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
At least, that is Michail Antonio’s opinion. The West Ham veteran spoke on BBC Sounds about a player who has been the subject of much speculation in the last 24 hours. Especially when Rio Ferdinand claimed that he possessed’more to his game than Haaland’ (Vibe with FIVE podcast).
Only Man City’s unstoppable number nine has scored more league goals (eight) than Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak (six) this season.
And, while Antonio admires the smooth Sweden international, he cannot imagine Isak overtaking his fellow Scandinavian at the top of the scoring lists.
Newcastle United can be broken by Alexander Isak.
“Well, there were some Newcastle fans who suggested the other day – and they were destroyed for it – that Isak will score more goals this year than Haaland. “I saw that and thought it was a little crazy,” Antonio claims.
“There’s levels to it. He’s a quality player, I’m not going to lie to you. The man is sharp. He is sharp, he’s quick, nimble, got great feet. I fouled him myself (during last week’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle at the London Stadium). I had to kick man down! He tried to cut inside and I was like; ‘no, slow your role mate!’.
“He is quality. But there is a difference in teams. Haaland will get more opportunities and he’s a finisher. It means he’ll get more goals.”
Isak has six Premier League goals, and Antonio already has a point
Imagine how many more chances Isak would have if he had Bernardo Silva, Jeremie Doku, Jack Grealish, Kevin de Bruyne, and others delivering a smorgasbord to his table.
However, while the Golden Boot may be out of reach for Isak, a place in Newcastle’s history books may not be. Is he the first Magpie since Alan Shearer to achieve 20 goals in a Premier League season? Don’t dismiss the possibility.
