Stuart Pearce makes ‘shock’ Newcastle United title prediction

Stuart Pearce predicted at the outset of the season that Newcastle United would dethrone Manchester City and win the Premier League this season.
Stuart Pearce thinks he will not change his mind about Newcastle United winning the Premier League this season. The former Newcastle United full-back believes Eddie Howe’s side will end their trophy drought and prevent Manchester City from winning a fourth consecutive title.

Newcastle began the season with a resounding home win against Aston Villa, but it was quickly followed by three straight defeats, including a devastating loss to Liverpool. Since the first international break, Howe’s team has gone unbeaten, and they presently sit atop their Champions League group after thumping Paris Saint-Germain.

Following their draw at West Ham, the Magpies are currently seventh in the table, seven points behind Arsenal and Tottenham at the top. Pearce concedes that his’stubborn’ personality stops him from revising his forecast, but he goes on to explain why he believes City will not regain their title.

When asked if City will recover from their recent slump and finish top again, he told talkSPORT:

“No, in all honesty.” I projected Newcastle would win the league at the start of the season. I’m not backing down from it now; I’m sticking to it because I’m stubborn like that.
“I still don’t think City will win the league. I think losing De Bruyne for that length of time at the start of the season is one of the main reasons I didn’t fancy them to win it this year.

“Make no mistake, whoever finishes above them will win the league. They are going to be in the top two, but I just think this year having achieved what they did last year, they’re just going to drop away a little bit.”
