Celtic have received a huge boost in terms of crucial player Cameron Carter-Vickers’ fitness.
The Hoops goalkeeper has not played since sustaining a hamstring injury against Aberdeen in early August, but he could be called up for tonight’s Champions League match against Lazio. Brendan Rodgers believes the defender is far further along in his recuperation than the champions anticipated and insists they would not take a risk unless he is fit.
He will be evaluated until the very last second after making ‘excellent progress’ in making the team as the Serie A outfit travels to Glasgow for matchday two of the division.
Nat Phillips also returned at the weekend to help with defensive concerns, however Gustaf Lagerbielke is sidelined for this one following his red card against Feyenoord. That means the Liverpool loanee will most likely accompany Liam Scales at the heart of the defense, with the periphery player excelling recently after stepping up when Celtic needed him.
Rodgers provided an update, saying, “In terms of Nat, he came through fine, so he will be available.” We wouldn’t take a chance on Cam unless he was physically fit. He has done exceptionally well. He is further along than we anticipated.
“He has had a real good week of training and he’s been doing lots of other work out on the field before that.”I indicated before that it [his return] might have been after the international break, but he’s made excellent progress, so we’ll just see if he can be in for the team [on Wednesday], and if he is, that’s obviously great news for us.”
